Designing a Bathroom for Germaphobes

Posted on: July 29,2016

If you know any germophobes – or have obsessive cleaning tendencies yourself – you know keeping things spotless is a herculean task. The bathroom, in particular, is a nightmare for those fearful of viruses and bacteria. The unfortunate – if not stomach-turning – truth for germaphobes is that personal hygiene isn’t as big of a priority as it should be. According to a recent survey, “Only 60% of women and 38% of men wash their hands after going to the toilet,” according to Yuck!

Germaphobe-Approved Bathroom Features

Luckily, technology is helping the germ-phobic among us to breathe a little easier! New germaphone-friendly bathroom designs can include the following:

A sink that shames you into washing your hands

In the commercial sphere, new sensors monitor hand-hygiene compliance in any zone or workflow where hand wash protocols are required. Why not use the same motion-sensing technology at home if it suits you? While it may seem a little over-the-top, it could be a fun way to teach the kids good habits.

A bathroom that cleans itself

Once again, new technologies make it possible to install certain bathroom fixtures that clean themselves. For instance, new products automatically mist bathrooms with anti-bacterial spray. Heated floors and new blower drying systems make it possible to keep bathrooms dry and moisture-free.

Don’t forget about doorknobs and handles

The right doorknobs can transmit significantly fewer germs than comparable materials. In one study, copper knobs and handles contained 90 to 100% fewer germs than chrome or brass fixtures.

Tips for Keeping Your Bathroom Clean

In general, bathrooms are full of germs for obvious reasons. Keeping the toilet, sink and tub clean and germ-free is a never-ending job. Some recommendations?

  • DO NOT store your toothbrush in the bathroom!
  • Clean the bathtub BEFORE you sit down and take a bath in it.
  • Soak your sponge/loofah in a bleach or vinegar solution.
  • Wash your bath towels regularly, and let them dry thoroughly between uses. When you do wash them, use hot water and don’t mix them with other things.
  • Wash bath mats at least once a week. Moisture+dirty feet+shoes = ICK.
  • Wipe down faucets, doorknobs, light switches or any surfaces with bleach or disinfectant wipes.
  • Wash your hands properly – every time. Yes, there’s a right way to wash your hands.
