Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling

Installing aging-in-place bathroom features can help homeowners remain in their current residences well into their later years. In fact, aging-in-place remodeling is the fastest growing sector of the home improvement industry!

The bathroom can be a hazardous place for aging homeowners. The risk of slips and falls increases with age and presents the possibility of broken hips or other health concerns and costs. A safe and easy-to-use bathroom is critical for aging homeowners who wish to remain independent for as long as possible.

Re-Bath & More can install friendly features such as grab bars, walk-in bathtubs, and curbless showers to your bathroom. Call us today at 717-208-2482717-208-2482 or contact us online to learn more.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist in Central PA

Why is Re-Bath & More uniquely qualified to remodel your bathroom with aging-in-place features? Our president, Jon Witmer, holds the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation. CAPS are builders and remodelers who have been trained and educated in the implementation of both functional and attractive home improvements for homeowners who want to live safely in their own homes as they age.

The CAPS designation was created by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). To maintain the CAPS certification, remodelers must complete three high-level courses and submit an application, signed code of ethics, and proof of business license and insurance to the NAHB. After completion, the remodeler must also complete 12 hours of continued education every three years.

At Re-Bath & More, we take the responsibility of aging-in-place remodeling very seriously. To learn more about what the CAPS designation entails, please contact us.

Benefits of Remodeling Your Bathroom

Why remodel your bathroom with aging-in-place features? To make daily tasks like bathing and using the bathroom easier. With the advances in universal design, an aging-in-place bathroom doesn’t have to look like a hospital—fixtures and furniture are far more stylish now, ensuring that your remodeling bathroom will look sleek and streamlined—just like a regular bathroom!

Basic bathroom remodeling installations and changes increase the feasibility of aging-in-place. Our most-requested aging-in-place bathroom services in Central PA homes are:

Grab Bar Installation

We install grab bars near toilets and showering areas to prevent falls and provide leverage when using the bathroom and showering. Today’s grab bars are more attractive than their original aluminum iterations, with a variety of finishes and styles that match any bathroom décor.

Walk-in Bathtub Installation

Walk-in-bathtubs eliminate the need to step over the side of a tub to get in. They have innovatively-designed “gates” to allow the user to step in along with grab bars to make sitting easier. Non-slip flooring inside the tub adds an additional layer of safety.

Curbless Shower Installation

Standalone showers with minimal lip or curb minimize the risk of falling while entering the shower. And, they look very sleek in a modern bath! Built-in benches can provide additional safety.

Additional changes we recommend include:

  • Non-slip tile to minimize the chances of slipping while in the bathroom.
  • Taller toilets, at least 2.5 inches higher than standard models, to allow for easier lowering and standing as homeowners age.
  • Recessive/integrated shelving in the shower to remove the need to bend down to reach shampoo and conditioner in a slippery space.
  • Increased space to move and allow for those with walkers and wheelchairs to easily maneuver in the room.
  • Full bathrooms on first floor to ensure that the ability to climb stairs does not hinder access to bathing.
  • Storage space within reach to minimize the need to crouch or bend down to reach shampoo, soap, toilet paper, or other toiletries.
  • Increased lighting to improve visibility as eyesight decreases with age.
  • Wall-hung sinks to provide room for those who use wheelchairs to roll directly up without hitting their knees on under-sink cabinetry.

One benefit of working with a CAPS-certified company like Re-Bath & More is that these safety and functionality improvements will not just be installed, but rather incorporated into the design and style of your bathroom. Some changes, like grab bars, are almost unnoticeable because they are so well integrated into the room.
